ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Albuquerque police said they’re using websites to take a closer look at which massage parlors are giving customers explicit service for a price.
Just last month, police raided three local massage parlors reportedly linked to prostitution. One of those the shops was listed on rubmaps.com, a website dedicated to showing users where to find massage parlors with something extra.
An undercover sergeant with the Albuquerque Police Department’s Vice Unit said the reality of sex blogging is all over the internet. Sex blogging involves users detailing exactly what and where they received explicit services and exactly what happened.
“I think what guys are trying to do is help each other out,” said the undercover officer. “They spend a lot of money going into many, many establishments -- wasting money trying to find what they're looking for and what this does is cut that down significantly.”
But police said the posts on the website aren’t illegal. For all police know, it could all be people writing about their fantasies. So instead, investigators use some of the details as a starting point to begin an undercover sting to get the details they need to bring down illegal activity.
“What we have to do, is we have to prove that criminal activity is existing through undercover work,” said the undercover officer.
Police said the websites are just one of many tools they use to investigate prostitution and crime rings in the city.
